Alcyone

Alcyone is one of the stars in the Pleiades. This is a young star, and the hydrogen beta line is in absorption and the hydrogen alpha line is in emission! Why is this so? The continuum level is subtracted. QCSPEC with 600 l/mm on the 10" Newtonian.

Gamma Cassiopeia

Gamma Cassiopeia shows a strong and broad emission in Hydrogen alpha, and a weaker emission in hydrogen beta. Whats going on? The continuum level is subtracted. QCSPEC with 600 l/mm.

This spectrum has not been calibrated for the instrument response. QCSPEC with 600 l/mm.

A Star Analyzer spectrum with 100 l/mm in front of the prime focus of the 10" Newtonian for comparison. The resolurion is now only about 10A so the spectrum is smeared compared to the QCSPEC result. This spectrum has not been calibrated for the instrument response. The isntrument response is here mainly due to the camera sensor in the Canon camera, while a number of lenses modulates the QCSPEC result above.
