HOBBY-SPECTROSCOPY

First attempts with the "Star analyzer 100" diffraction grating from PATON HAWKSLEY EDUCATION LTD with 100 lines/mm. I have mounted it in front of an (inexpensive) Canon zoom lens (set at 200 mm focal length), or in a 10 inch f/6 Newtonian reflector at different distances from the sensor (up to about 20 cm !). The camera is a Canon Rebel XSI (or 450D), with filter cutoff immediately above H-alpha (one of the HUTECH filters) to block out the infrared wavelengths for normal astrophotography. So far, uncalibrated response on the camera sensor. Images by R.S., Hågår Observatory, 19-20 feb. 2011, and Quantum Cafe Observatory, 2011. The ideas come from Robin's Astronomy Page.
Cheers, Roar Skartlien.

  • Spectroscopy Gallery, 2011

You might need to "allow for blocked contents" to activate the Gallery application from VisualLightBox. The following examples use "Zoomify" (movable "magnifying glass") on some of the spectra in the Gallery (this requires Adobe Flashplayer, though). Both packages are freeware.

  • Orion nebula: Emission in Oxygen, Helium, Hydrogen
